Administration for Native Americans posts three grant applications, two for Native language preservation and maintenance (P&M) and one for social and economic development (SEDS).
The Administration for Native Americans (ANA), an office within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, released three grants that tribal and Native American-serving schools and organizations are eligible for, including:
Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance (P&M)
Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance - Esther Martinez Immersion (P&M EMI)
Social and Economic Development Strategies (SEDS)
Note: Jodi Archambault, special assistant to the president for Native American affairs under President Barack Obama, published an article in The New York Times on January 24, 2021, about the impact of COVID-19 on Native languages. Archambault notes that, as fluent elders pass away because of the pandemic:
we are losing the links that bind thousands of generations to the present day. We are losing our chance to inherit their understanding of what it means to be human.
Applying for one of the ANA language grants below may be an opportunity to address this critical need and implement programming that reinforces Native language learning among youth.
1. Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance
This program provides funding for projects to support assessments of the status of the native languages in an established community, as well as the planning, designing, restoration, and implementing of native language curriculum and education projects to support a community's language preservation goals.

Expected number of awards: 16
Award sizes: $100,000 to $300,000 per budget period
Award period: 12, 24, or 36 months

The ANA Eastern Region is offering three-day trainings about applying for the language preservation and maintenance grants. Each training is from 1:00–4:00 p.m. EST. There are four training sessions available for free registration, but attendance is limited to 25 participants each, so register early.
2. Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance - Esther Martinez Immersion
The program provides funding for community-based projects that ensure continuing vitality of Native languages through immersion-based instruction. Programs funded under the EMI funding opportunity announcement must meet the requirements for either a Native American Language Nest, or a Native American Survival School. As defined, language nests are “site-based educational programs that provide instruction and child care through the use of a Native American language for at least 5 children under the age of 7 for an average of at least 500 hours per year per student.” Native American Survival Schools are “site-based educational programs for school-age students that provide an average of at least 500 hours of instruction through the use of 1 or more Native American languages for at least 10 students for whom a Native American language survival school is their principal place of instruction.”

3. Social and Economic Development Strategies (SEDS)
This program is focused on community-driven projects designed to grow local economies, strengthen Native American families, including the preservation of Native American cultures, and decrease the high rate of current challenges caused by the lack of community-based businesses, and social and economic infrastructure in Native American communities. In the past, Native American-serving schools have received funding from SEDS grants for programs that bridge the gap between education and business development (often in partnership with tribal governments, local financial institutions, chambers of commerce, or other community groups).
